HOMEwork Assignment One

Part One - Course Materials

Due Thursday, January 19th at the beginning of class. 

As a team purchase the following items that will be used during the semester in the studio setting. You may purchase the items at any store of your choosing or recycle times you own. Pens must match brands below exactly, paper products may be from any source. These items are to be at the next class period and ready to use (unwrapped) and placed on your desk. (Share costs equally between team members.) 

  • 12 pads of 3"X3" sticky notes per student on the team. Each team member should have a 4 different pastel color pads. (example here)
  • 2 Sticky (the kind that sticks to the wall) 30X25 easel pads per team. (example here)
  • One pack of 100 3X5 note cards per team.
  • One twelve (12) pack of Black Sharpie Fine Point markers per team. (example here
  • One twenty four (24) pack of Variety Colors of Sharpie Fine Point Markers per team (example here
  • One 12 pack of assorted dry erase markers per team. (example here)
  • One 8 pack of sharpie flip chart markers per team. (example here) 
  • One combination lock to be shared by the team. 
  • One box for above supplies that fits in a file cabinet drawer. 

Individual items are to be acquired and brought to class every day. You may contribute your own items to the team supplies. Have these items ready each day for class use. 

Order your class books immediately. You will need them for both individual assignments and team projects. Bring your 

  • classic 5X8.25 large, plain page, moleskine (example here) dedicated for the class. OR you can make your own dedicated class sketchbook from recycled paper. Fashion and well craft the sketch book to meet the similar size and page numbers as the classic moleskin. 
  • variety of felt tip/technical pens, 2-4, black, in a variety of thickness, copic brand multi liners are highly recommended. 
  • one short (12" or less) metal ruler 
  • one glue stick
  • one small set of scissors
  • one exact knife (#11) with cap and extra blades
  • one pencil case to safely store and carry the above items

Computers and Photography

  • Laptops, if available, are to be brought to every class session. 
  • cameras, from smart phones, point and shoot, to better will be needed on each team to complete assignments. 

Order or purchase your books as soon as possible. You will need your books next week and to complete this assignment. Each student needs their own copy of the textbooks.

Innovating for People Handbook of Human-Centered Design Methods, Luma Institute, (2012) Innovating for People is an essential text and you will be using it frequently during class sessions.

The Sketchnote Handbook: the illustrated guide to visual note taking, Rohd, Peachpit Press; 1 edition (December 13, 2012)

Students will read and complete exercises from the text to learn basic visual note taking skills to increase overall communication effectiveness. 

Book ARCH 525

The instructor will be assigning a theory book for the students in ARCH 525. Look for an email message announcing the title. Please order as soon as possible once you receive the email message. 

PART Two - Take the StrengthFinders Survey

Due Thursday, January 19th at the beginning of class.

As part of this course you will be working in teams. You and your teammates will need to combine strengths to work effectively. By taking the Strenghtfinders survey you can discover your talents and strengths that you can add to your team and in your life pursuits.

Download the three PDFs generated specifically for you. Read through the long descriptions for each of your signature themes and highlight the words and/or sentences that best describe you. Then, answer the following questions: 

  • What is your first reaction to these terms? What do they mean to you at this point? 
  • Does anything in the report surprise you? 
  • How well do you feel your Signature Themes describe the ways in which you most naturally, think, feel, and behave as a unique individual? 
  • How do your themes themes relate to your approach to design? 
  • With whom will you share your results?

Turn in a printed copy of your strengths as generated by the survey and your responses to the questions above.

Part THREE - Team Dinner

Due Tuesday, January 24th at the beginning of class. 

Each team is to have dinner and take the time to get to know each other. Plan a dinner and meet the following criteria:

  • Organize a date for a group dinner and allow enough time to get to know each other. (Everyone Must attend.)  
  • Select a location that is appropriate for everyone on the team. (Consider the ambiance appropriate for small groups and discussions, location/ease of access, and menu/cuisine.) Ask all team members for input before you finalize a location and time. 
  • Complete the following assignment linked here. 

Part FOUR - Sketchnote Handbook

Due Thursday, January 26th.

In this assignment you will be practicing visual note taking skills that are important for communicating design ideas. One of the biggest issues in design is communication new ideas. Anyone who has legible handwriting can gain basis visual communication skills to make simple drawings, diagrams, and interesting text. If you are a visual designer in DSGN 430 uses these exercises to take leadership on techniques to engage your design team in holistic word + pictures communication instruction. Learning to engage others through sketching is a valuable skills, when all of the team is comfortable making and sharing images then ideas will be more effectively communicated. 

Individually read Chapters 1-3 in the Sketchnote Handbook. While reading take visual notes of the chapters. Completely cover the spread of two pages of notes for each chapter minimum in your moleskine sketchbook. As you take notes emulate and develop your own style of visual note taking. 

In your team complete the following exercises. All students are to complete the exercise individually, but visual art majors in DSGN 430 are to take the lead and assist others in learning basis sketching skills. Cover the content from pages 149-164. 

Starting with page 149 in the Sketchnote Handbook complete the following exercises. Using one sheet each of your moleskine sketchbook make one sheet each of squares, circles, lines, triangles, and dots. Once you have completed the shapes on each page transform the shapes into objects. For example, transform the circle into a pizza. 

On two 8.5X11 sheets of paper reproduce the grid on pages 154-155. Complete the exercises as outlined the book on your paper. Take finished paper project and carfully add it to your moleskine sketchbook by folding and glueing it to a page. 

On two pages of your moleskine draw people using the star method. Complete with clothes, faces, an hair. 

On two pages of your moleskine draw people using the grey method. Complete with clothes, faces, an hair. Embellish!!!! 

On two 8.8 X ll Sheets of paper complete the exercise on page 160 and 160. Fold and glue your pages in your moleskine. 

One thee pages of your moleskine reproduce the exercises on pages 162-164. Try to copy the pages as exactly as possible. Once copied, complete the exercises. 

Visual Design Leaders in DSGN 430 + ARCH 525 are to add one page of reflective visual notes in their moleskine on what they learned by instructing visual note taking.
