20X20X20 Space
Design Statement
Create a series of 20X20X20 spacial explorations by subtracting elements from a solid form. Using the computer (Rhino) create a 20X20X20 cube, create secondary elements and subtract them from the cube leaving occupiable space. Using information from the computer generated models create a 10”X10”X10” cube cast in plaster. Using the plaster cast draft sections, plans, and elevations. Use the cast plaster model and a miniature camera to explore view, light, and site.
Learning Objectives
- Creation of space
- Establishing creative boundaries
- Creating design alternatives (ideation)
- Transformation of digital to material
- Digital and material making and craft
- Understanding and communicating section and plan views
- Exploration of view, light.
- Space and Human Scale
Outline of Process
- Become familiar with tools need to create form rectilinear forms and boolean operations in Rhino.
- Compose a series (15) of spacial explorations of a 20X20X20 cube by subtraction. Emphasis is placed on creating ones own creative boundaries.
- Select one of the variations and execute the design as a 10”X10”X10” plaster casting. Focus on critical analysis and selection of design for plaster implantation.
- Execute a design in a plaster cast 10”X10”X10”.
- Using the plaster version draw/draft plans and sections.
- Take the plaster cast model to various sites and photograph from the interior view and lighting with a miniature camera.
Assignment One
Using 3-d modeling software create an occupiable space by subtracting forms from a solid cube.
Each spatial exploration is to have the following attributes:
- Framing View
- Primary Space and Secondary Space
- Transitional Space
Create three distinct studies of negative space. Each study is to start with a 20'X20'X20' solid cube. Plan and write down specific creative boundaries for each exploration. The creative boundaries should provide limitations for how to make space in the solid cube. Keep the creative boundaries simple, but adhere to them strictly.
Starting Boundaries:
- The all studies must be a single contiguous form.
- All studies must be created so they can be cast in plaster.
For each of the three studies create five iterations. At the end of the assignment you will have a total of 15 studies.
Select three of fifteen studies that best create the attributes listed above (framing view, primary and secondary space, and transitional space) and compile the following views to present on Friday in class.
For each of the three selected studies create prints that communicate:
- Written statement or list of creative boundaries
- 2 perspective views that describe the exterior form
- 3 perspective views that describe the interior space
Make good judgements to how to best render or communicate the views with light to communicate space and form. You should have a total of 15 prints and creative boundaries to present on Friday.
