Furniture Design - IARC 480
Project 1 - part A, B, and c
Design and construct a full scale prototype of a stool or a swing for a context separate from yourself.
stool - designed for use by one person, constructed from one material, and the overall size does not exceed 24” in any direction.
swing - designed for use by one person in a seat only configuration, constructed from two materials, and the seat does not exceed 24” in any direction.
a. Pursue Good Design - with a passion!
- Read - Dieter Rams 10 Principles of “Good Design”
- Watch - Objectified
Write and submit three questions that emerge from the reading and three questions that emerge from Objectified.
b. Ideate and document three (3) unique contexts for a stool or swing.
Observe the context and take time to absorb the genius loci and understand nature of the people.
Capture two thoughtful and well composed and edited photographs from each of the three contexts.
- one photograph of the overall context
- one photograph of an essential condition or material detail unique to the context
Author a devastatingly interesting and creative narrative paragraph or haiku poem describing the desired relevance of the of stool or swing to the unique context.
Compose a well designed single page 10” X 10” brief for each context that meets the following requirements:
- allow a 3/4” border on all edges
- visually compost the photograph so that together do not cover more than 1/3 of the sheet area
- create a title with three words that describe the context in the form of verbs and adjectives. Refrain from describing your design or the context literally, but allow the character of the context be explored with words)
c. Ideate three (3) exploratory and divergent design proposals of a stool or swing for one of the above contexts.
Completely fill two (2) 10” X 10” sheets with rapid ideation exploratory sketches for each design proposal (you will have six (6) sheets when you are done with all three proposals).
Use - verithin color pencils, graphite pencils, markers and other media as necessary to develop high quality rapid sketching. Practice sketching, implement techniques used in INDS 371, and be experimental with media.
- multiple 3-dimensional views (axon and perspectives)
- orthogonal views (top, side, bottom views in section and elevation)
- details as they emerge of edges, counters, and connections
