Assignment 2
PART ONE - Revised Diagrams
DUE- Wednesday, January 14th at the beginning of class.
Based on the review of assignment one revise your hand drawn analysis drawings.(Demonstrate increased understanding of the initial analysis and improved visual communication skills.)
- Each drawings is to be completed as freehand drawn with a black ink pens and color pencil on trace.
- Label and key your drawing as needed with simple block lettering.
- Print the linked plan as the new underlay template. (download here)
- Implement a variety of line weights and colors to best communicate the design ideas in the analysis diagram.
- Reference examples in Form, Space, and Order to assist in the analysis terminology.
Hierarchical Spatial Analysis Diagram - Create a diagram that illustrates the hierarchal relationship of space as experienced on the first floor of the Art and Architecture Building. Consider spatial scale, volume, and overlapping,intersecting spaces.
Order-Structure Analysis Diagram - Create a diagram that illustrates the primary ordering principle(s), regulating lines, and structural and non-structural elements.
Circulation-Social Occupancy Analysis Diagram - Create a diagram that illustrates the primary and secondary circulation patterns and building entrances. Communicate private, semi-private, and social spaces.
Part Two - A+A sketchup model
- 25% DUE- Wednesday, January 14th. at the beginning of class. Demonstrate you have completed the import, and modeled the walls and floor.
- 100% Due Friday, January 16th at the beginning of class.
Using Sketchup 2015 create a model of the A+A building. Each student is to complete one floor of the building and models will be compiled to complete a complete model of the entire building. Import the following DXF file as an underlay in sketchup. (download here).

Model Scale
- Scale the model so dimensions are entered at full scale in sketchup. (A scale line, 10'-0" long, is provided at the bottom left of each plan on the downloaded DXF file. This reference line should be exactly 10'-0" in sketchup prior to staring your model.
- Using site verification, measure or estimate, vertical dimensions when extruding walls, floor thicknesses, window sills, and the central stairs.
Model Detail
- Include all floors, ceilings, columns, and walls.
- On the first, second, and third floors model the floor, but not the ceilings.
- On the fourth floor model the floor and ceilings.
- Measure or estimate vertical dimensions.
11’-0” Floor to ceiling (underside of concrete joists)
13’-6” Floor to floor.
- Model all windows (interior and exterior) and doorways are to remain as empty openings.
- Only model the central stairs.
- At this time you do not need to model the handrails, landscape or exterior stairs.
