Project 2 - pre assignment

Please read carefully and watch the all of the videos in order. This "pre-assignment" has an important and subtle objective, to assist in making you comfortable, interested, and familiar with 3-d computer modeling. You are a beginner and the expectation is to be curious and to learn. Do not try to master every skill from the beginning, but just go along and try, if you run into trouble give it a good effort, ask a friend if they can help, and move on if you get stuck.

You have an amazing tool that can be used to imagine, create, and communicate like no other time in history. This is a life long journey using a tool that is like no other tool, a machine that can be anything you imagine, we are going to use it to imagine new space, form, materials, and light.

Watch this video first:

HOW DID THEY DO THAT? (WATCH This Video Second)

Check out these amazing computer renderings of interiors and buildings published on de zeen.

Now it is time to do some tutorials.

IMPORANT notes Before you begin the Rhino Tutorials:

  • Please watch with an open stance toward developing an understanding to computer modeling, You are not going to be tested on the content of the videos, nor do you have to be an expert overnight. Really, it's okay, just look forward to learning how to make great computer models!
  • You will be learning and using Rhino, and other software, from this project on in class. Think about how the software will enhance your ability to design, what might it limit in your design?
  • Try along with the video tutorials (You can download the files from the lynda.com site) and if you get the a place where you just don't get it... just make a note of how you may need help and move to the next tutorial.

How to make sure computer GRAPHIC SOFTWARE and Using tutorialS are MOST effective:

And yes.... I do expect you to do the following four items.

  • Always have a sketchbook when using the computer to work out problems and ideas on paper as you use the computer. You just can not and should not do everything on the computer.
  •  Always use a mouse (do not try to 3-model on the computer with a trackpad). A mouse will allow for better precision and higher productivity.
  • Use the largest monitor available when using graphic applications such as Rhino. (Large monitors are shown to greatly increase productivity, allow for comparative decision making, increase collaboration, and allow for better spatial acuity.) Refrain from designing on your laptop, use your large monitor in studio whenever you can.
  • Use two screens when watching and learning with tutorial videos. When learning from tutorials use the large studio monitor for modeling and your laptop screen to watch the video, or if on the road, use the laptop for the modeling and a tablet for watching the video. Toggling back and forth between the video and modeling environment on a single screen makes for a miserable experience following territorials.

We are using Rhino 5.0

If you do not have a copy of Rhino you can download a copy here to use until they purchase one. (90 Day free trial.) https://www.rhino3d.com/download

The Windows version of Rhino is recommended, it is possible to use the new Mac version to complete the assignments this term, but the interface is a bit different and the tutorials are for windows. It is possible and realistically doable on the Mac, but recommended on the PC/Windows end.

COMUTER SUPPORT

If you have problems installing software or general non-software instructional issues with your computer please go to the help desk at the library. The library help desk supports many technical needs students may encounter. If you need assistance loading software the help desk in Hodges can assist. Issues such as general operating system, viruses, loading of software are great items for the help desk.

Expected outcome due on Wednesday 9:05 AM:

Make one lofted  shape with two curves. Print an image of the lofted shape and turn in as the indication you have completed the tutorials.

LINK AND CUSTOM PLAY LIST:

Go here to access the lynda.com custom play list. Use your UTK login and you can access the Rhino tutorials for this assignment. The account is set up so I get a report if you have completed all of the tutorial sessions.
