Project Objective - Remember that design is about engaging creative exploration, taking risks, and making good decisions. You will be evaluated on the above processes and outcomes based on the project statement. This is not about following instructions or a set of rules, but entering into exploration and design experimentation. Demonstrate that you can thoughtfully and critically challenge the creative opportunities.  Focus on expressing ideas that further your understanding of space, light, and material in relation to the fundamentals of design elements and principles.

- TRANSFORMATION -

Transform your design for a Garden of Light and Shadows to a open air "pavilion" retreat for one of the following composers. (Listen to the music of the selected composer as part of the assignment.) The following composers, many Pulitzer Prize winners, are internationally recognized for their excellence.

Retain the strong aspects of your current design investigation and transform the open air pavilion into a retreat for the composer. The pavilion retreat is part of lager rural getaway where the composer writes musical compositions.

  • The retreat is to be created with one major space to take advantage of the view with built-in seating, and one minor space with a built in desk for composing.
  • The major space seating is to be built-in for 4-6 people and designed to enhance discussion among friends, colleagues, and family with emphasis on deepening relationships.
  • Assume a hilltop site with the best view to the south.
  • Identify north on your model with an arrow.
  • The pavilion is located in the northern hemisphere.
  • All access to the site is by walking only. (Assume a residential structure with piano located 200 feet from the pavilion.)
Although you are not expected to design the retreat in compliance with all requirements of building codes, you should make your design with the safety of users in mind.  In particular, consider the usefulness and safety of handrails and guardrails.  Spaces and platforms that can be occupied and reached by stairs and are located 30” or more above surrounding levels, must have perimeter enclosure provided by planes, screen element or 42” high guardrail. Guardrail will be a horizontal 1/8” stick. It should be worked into the composition as an abstract element that does not detract from the design.
There will be no need to provide for food preparation, bathroom, sleeping, etc.  Nor is there a need for windows and doors: use openings in walls to accommodate functions associated with windows and doors.  This retreat should be designed as a pavilion, belvedere, summerhouse, or gazebo.  It will be used for short periods of time.

Site Considerations - Be mindful of the sequence and approach to the structure. The design may include water and natural elements that complement the overall experience of the design. Light and shadow are to remain major elements of the design exploration. Continue with the 40' X 80' site limitation.

Space - the design must demonstrate the control of spatial qualities, particularly the relationship between the major and minor spaces of the pavilion. The design elements below are to support the overall spatial quality of the design, not applied, but integrated to the overall experience.

Pavilion Design Elements to be included - You must combine elements so you only have a total of three applications in the design. For example a glossy saturated paint for color and finish or a translucent laser cut latticework.

  • Color - (one saturated color on a single element to create focus or direction)
  • Opacity - (one element with translucent qualities to dissolve space or mute direct light)
  • Finish - (use of one glossy finish to extend spatial qualities)
  • Texture - (enhanced materiality with acute angle direct lighting)
  • Repeat Pattern -  (use the 3-D printer or laser cutter to create latticework or tile to demonstrate control of design elements at multiple scales)

REMEMBER - Combine the above elements so you have only THREE applications of the design elements.

Design Principles - Final design proposals are to clearly employ design ordering principals to support the overall compositional structure of the design. Create a diagram the demonstrates

Due Dates:

  • Monday, November 3rd - Sketchup model transformation of pavilion with major and minor spaces.
    • Based on the above program and criteria redesign your pavilion to accommodate the program for a composer.
    • Create axonometric and perspective images of the pavilion. 8-10
    • Post process images on your website.
    • Print images for design review MONDAY 9:05.
    • Continue to print 3-d pattern studies as needed.
    • Create a repeat lattice pattern in illustrator or sketch up based on the structure of a piece of music you listen to by your chosen composer. (This pattern will be laser cut and may be incorporated in your final design proposal.
    • Bring a printed image of the pattern to the review at 9:05 Monday.
  • Wednesday, November 5th - Light and Pattern Study, revised landscape study and diagram.
  • Friday, November 7th, revised MDF site model with all major elements.
  • Monday, November 10th, material "sketch" model of Pavilion and updated sketchup model of site.
