Assignment Three
Diagram Presentation
FINAL DUE DATE: (REVISED- NOW WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 28th) Monday, January 26th at the beginning of class. (See interim due date below)
Create a formal presentation of analysis diagrams and photographic images to communicate the relationships of systems, implementation of design elements and principles, and the environmental experience. The final presentation is to be created and printed in Adobe Illustrator. You are to limit your information to one sheet no larger than 36X36.
Diagrams: Building on the previous assignments create the following diagrams in Adobe Illustrator based on the ground floor information.
- REVISED - Site Figure Ground - Using page two of the handout create a simple and elegant figure ground of the Art and Architecture building. Create a figure ground diagram that illustrates the spatial relationships between buildings and the roads, paths, and sidewalks linking the buildings. The following are links to a variety of examples, but please to not directly copy, but use as inspiration and direction for your own creative exploration.
- REVISED - Xray axonometric space diagram - four story building axonometric that illustrates the variety and relationships of the different volumes of spaces in A+A. Use color and transparency settings to show the variety, scale and locations of the spatial volumes in the Art and Architecture Building. Implement transparency of materials and or rendering settings in sketchup to create the diagram. Export as a TIFF or JPEG image. The following are links to a variety of examples, but please to not directly copy, but use as inspiration and direction for your own creative exploration.
- Solar Section Analysis Diagram - using a building section generated from your sketchup model and scanned water color washes create solar diagram.
- create a latitudinal section (north/south) section through all four floors of the building. Cut the section in a location to maximize the analysis potential.
- use two different water color washes as underlays to illustrate the sun at noon on the winter and summer solstice to illustrate how light enters and interacts with the interior space.
- Circulation-Social Occupancy Plan Analysis Diagram - Create a diagram that illustrates the primary and secondary circulation patterns and building entrances. Communicate private, semi-private, and social spaces. (See Ching, Form, Space, and Order, Chapter 5)
- Hierarchical Spatial Plan Analysis Diagram - Create a diagram that illustrates the hierarchal relationship of space as experienced on the first floor of the Art and Architecture Building. Consider spatial scale, volume, and overlapping, intersecting spaces.
- Order-Structure Plan Analysis Diagram - Create a diagram that illustrates the primary ordering principle(s), regulating lines, and structural and non-structural elements. Overlay the following information as the analysis reveals:
- Ordering Principles - (See Ching, Form, Space, and Order, Chapter 7) - Axis, Symmetry, Hierarchy, Rhythm, Datum, Transformation.
- Spatial Organization - (See Ching, Form, Space, and Order, Chapter 4) How are the spaces organized, centralized, linear, radial, clustered, grid, or combinations?
- Regulating Lines
- Structural and non-structural elements.
Photography: Create a series of photographs that illustrate the concepts found in the analysis studies listed above. These photographs can be taken at different times of the day and days of the week. Using a digital camera (you can use your phone or other camera) photograph the following design elements and principles in the Art and Architecture Building. (Black and white or color is fine.)
- Narrative Circulation - Create a series of photographs that leads a person though a circulation experience in the building.
- Essential Occupancy Destinations. Photographs of social destinations. (2-3)
- Essential Solar Light Experiences. Range of solar light experience in the building during various times of day. (5-7)
- Order and Organization of Space - 2-3 photographs that illustrate the concepts of order and organization found in your analysis diagram.
All photographs should be edited in the following manner:
- Framed and cropped to communicate essential information and eliminate distracting background information.
- In focus, sharp, clear information.
- Adjusted contrast, white balance, and color.
Final Printed Presentation Requirements:
- One sheet, 36X36 maximum size.
- Use one "classic" modern San Serif font only. (helvetica, futura, frutiger, gill sans, universe,...) The typeface should support and not call attention to itself or distract from the analysis and photography. Use variety in the font family to create variety and hierarchy.
- Size, proportion, and layout photographs, keys, and analysis diagrams to communicate and overall impression to the depth and breadth of the analysis. Use a simple orthogonal grid organizing system to layout information.
- Label on diagrams and photographs to provide clarity to a first time reader of your presentation.
- Only include your name, semester, and class in the title block.
Interim Due Dates:
Wednesday, January 19th at the beginning of class.
- Fully complete the four floor sketchup model of A+A. By combining your floor with team mates floor each student is to have a completed building model. Use the vertical dimensions here.
- Complete six full page water color gradient washes, minimum 10X10 inches for each wash.
- Order-Structure Plan Analysis Diagram - Create a revised hand drawn diagram that illustrates the primary ordering principle(s), regulating lines, and structural and non-structural elements.
- Using the packet of drawings in found here. Create a basic daylight analysis from the building section. Use hand drawn techniques similar to previous assignments.
- Study how the sun relates to the Art an Architecture building here. (check the sumner and winter solstice positions of the sun related to the A+A)
- calculate the maximum altitude of the sun on the winter and summer solstice. (go to sunposition.info to generate solar calculations. )
- clearly communicate in a diagram format how the direct sunlight enters the building on each floor for each day.
- Check this example of a building section with sunlight analysis.
- Download and install Adobe Illustrator and make sure it runs on your computer. If is does not run, contact the instructor for alternate access to the application. If you are new to illustrator try these tutorials here... Bring your computer to
Friday, January 21st at the beginning of class.
- Complete and print one illustrator layout (8X8) with a variety of line types, thickness, value, and color. (Neatness and good design skills for layout and use of color matter.)
- demonstrate a single standard black line at 10 different thickness (.25 point - 10 point)
- demonstrate a single 2 point line at 9 different values from black to 10% grey.
- demonstrate dashes, Japanese dots, and lines with arrows
- Complete and print one illustrator layout (8X8) with a variety of shapes, in different values, transparencies, and gradients. (Neatness and good design skills for layout and use of color matter.)
