Assignment 1 tracing paper overlays + computer tutorials
In this assignment you will explore the basics of circulation, order, and space in the Art and Architecture building through free hand diagraming. You will also complete a basic tutorial of sketchup make to learn the basic techniques of digital model making. These skills will be used to complete a three dimensional model of the Art and Architecture building.
The Art and Architecture Building, which was designed by Bruce and Doug McCarty of McCarty/Holsaple/McCarty is a building each of you know well. This assignment will challenge you to see beyond the obvious and to explore the subtle nuance through the space, proportion and detail of this extraordinary piece of architecture. In this case, design establishes a place, implying aspects that are both poetic and conventional.
Students are required to participate in the MAXmin competition. Note email correspondence for requirements.
Due Friday, January 9th (9:00 AM) at the beginning of Class:
Analysis Part One
This project will begin with a series of abstract drawing of three important elements of the building and site design in order to understand their holistic relationship. Use attached drawings to trace (freehand) onto tracing paper the following diagrams:
Print a set of the drawings above and then use trace to create the following diagrams freehand in graphite. Emphasis is to be placed on the analysis, quality and consistency of freehand lines, and hierarchical use of line weight.
A. Circulation
Begin with the first floor plan only and use two heavy, graphite lines for the primary circulation patterns and two lighter line weights for the secondary. Keep the patterns simple.
B. Order
Using the first floor plan only outline the building with a heavy line weight. Next, using a lighter line weight, define the primary structure and finally, using an even lighter line weight define a secondary structural grid pattern.
C. Space
Using the first floor plan only outline the primary space(s) with a heavy line weight. Next, using a lighter line weight, define the secondary spaces and finally, using an even lighter line weight define the tertiary spaces.
Create a second set of analysis implementing color. Use color to communicate different systems circulation, order, and space.
You will be emailed readings to correspond to the above analysis portion of the project.
