Planar Garden Elements - Light, Surface, and Space
In this assignment you will be investigating a variety of vertical planar elements for your garden. The elements can be imagined as surfaces with repeating relief patterns, lattice work to filter light, or subtle planes to diffuse light.
By completing this exercise you will create the first step on the investigations for vertical surfaces in your garden.
1. Study the drawings in the exhibit “Promiscuous Surfaces: Perry Kulper Drawn Out”. Consider how Kulper's process and design work can influence a design for a new vertical "wall" surface in your garden space.
Study both the techniques and design of Kulper.
2. Quickly create a variety (7 or more) 5"X5" square "sketch" compositions that are inspired from Perry Kulper's work in Ewing Gallery. Consider both a counterpoint (contrasting) design idea or a complementary (similar) design idea for your garden vertical surface design. Complete these sketches in the gallery while looking at the work directly.
Imagine each of your sketches as a wall element 5' X 5’ and a repeating pattern element 5"X5".
3. Take two (2) of the best sketches and transform them into 2 10" X 10” drawings. Create one drawing that is a wall elevation of a 5”X5’ section of wall and the other as a double size detail of a 5”X5” tile. Use hand drawings, computer, or other mediums to express your ideas. Consider layering drawings and mixing mediums.
- Focus on the wall being part of your overall garden design and should support the experience.
- Keep the elements of the design simple, limit the forms, shape, and colors to the minimal needed to execute your ideas.
- Continue to use regulating lines.
- Allow the work to be expressive of the process.
Keep you work restrained, minimal, and use the principles and elements you have learned in class to provide creative boundaries.
Write a brief statement to the describing your creative boundaries, design process, and outcomes of the design.
Post your work on your website for Monday morning, October 6th.
