Vector Diagramming, Color and Final Presentations Documents

Diagramming Steps:

  1. Create a new very well composed and illuminated full framed photographic study of your organic object and paper vessel. (Take a minimum of 5 photographs in the lighting lab with a background. and choose the best photograph that describes the spatial qualities and overall design (restraint, contrast, presence) back in studio on your large computer monitor.)

    1. MAKE SURE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHS ARE FULL FRAME AND THE ENTIRE DESIGN IS SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH

  2. Edit the photograph in Adobe Lightroom to (exposure, contrast, balance highlights and clarity, and color saturation.)

  3. Create an 11X17 document in illustrator with a white background and match the vertical or horizontal orientation to the to the photograph a shown in step 2 above.

  4. In Illustrator create a unique layer named “photograph” and place your photo created in step two in the document. Then set the transparency of the photograph to a faint image (20-40%), so you can just see the image.

  5. Create two new layers, name one organic object and the second paper vessel.

  6. In each of the respective layers create vector diagrams of the respective objects. Note the images below of the YOUR DIAGRAM WILL INCLUDE VECTORS OF THE ORGANIC OBJECT AND PAPER VESSEL.

    RULES FOR VECTOR ANALYSIS

    1. Select and apply complementary colors for the organic object and the paper vessel. (E.g. Organic object vector lines are green/blue vessel vector lines are red/orange.

    2. Vector lines are only closed circles or ovals or continue to the edge of the document as straight lines, circles or ovals that go off the page, or parabolas.

    3. Use thin (between .25-1.0 mm line thickness) to diagram the relative strength of the vector. (Visually stronger lines are thick, 1.0, visual weak are .25).

  7. See the final assignment for the document saving perimeters.

Color Studies Steps:

  1. Using your very best photograph create the following color studies in Lightroom using the following guidelines.

    1. Under the develop tab Convert your photograph into a black and white by selecting Black&White in treatment.

    2. Make exposure, tone, and other edits to your image increase the spatial and design qualities of contrast, restraint, and presence.

    3. Using the Split Toning Window complete the following color studies. (Right click on your photo in the thumbnail bar at the bottom of the screen and select make a visual copy to create a new set of edits on the same photograph.)

      1. Complementary Color

      2. Analogous Color

      3. Colors of your Choice

    4. Visually balance the colors for in terms of saturation and value to give the image an overall even distribution of intensity color and range of darks and lights.

Final Presentation Steps:

DUE: Monday, September 17th at the beginning of class:

  1. Three amazing photographs (edited in Adobe Lightroom)in black and white of your overall design of the organic object and paper vessel. The images are to be technical superior photographs, well edited and communicate the spatial and design qualities (contrast, restraint, and presence). Export as a JPEG, quality 90, NO resizing of image.)

  2. Three color studies with phenomenal visually balanced colors in terms of saturation and value to give the image an overall even distribution of intensity color and range of darks and lights.

  3. Two vector diagram studies of your organic object and paper vessel.

    1. one study with the photograph (reduced in transparency) and all of the vector lines

    2. one study with the photograph layer hidden and only the vector lines showing.

  4. One each evenly illuminated photographs of your hand drawings on BFK paper. Straighten and make sure the photograph represents the actual drawing accurately. (Edit in lightroom and Export as a JPEG, quality 90, NO resizing of image.)

  5. One evenly illuminated photograph of your best gesture drawing. Straighten and make sure the photograph represents the actual drawing accurately. (Edit in lightroom and export as a JPEG, quality 90, NO resizing of image.)
