Assignment 3

DUE: Friday, September 7 at the beginning of class.

Explore:

Photographs and drawing as representation of space, form, and line.

Step One:

Create 15 full frame (edge to edge on two sides minimum) photographs of your organic object and demonstrate excellence with the following criteria.

Create  15 full frame (edge to edge on three sides minimum) detail close up photographs of your object that reveal space and the material nature of the organic object.

  • Spatial composition, allow the organic object dynamically create spatial tension and be asymmetrically balanced to relate to the frame of the photograph.
  • Well illuminated photographs, explore lighting in relation to the form and space to reveal the contours and details of the organic object.
  • Technically accurate photographs, use low ISO settings, tripods, and explore exposure settings to create a high resolution of photograph that reveals sharp focus and detail of the organic object.
  • Post all photography on Slack

Step Two:

Select two superior images, one overall and one closeup that will be used in a drawing exercise. Without distorting the image, print each image on a 8.5X11 sheet of paper in full color. Ask your mentor for assisting with printing.

Step Three:

Purchase a sheet of BFK paper as shown in class and tear in two halves perpendicular to the long edge. You will have two 15X22 sheets.

Determine the frame ratio of your image. (The ratio is the numeric relationship of the length and width of your image.) Tear the each BFK paper sheet once more to match your image ratio. Retain the 15" edge and the smaller of the ratio to have the largest pieces of paper possible. When you complete this step the short side of your final paper should be 15" and the long edge in correct promotion of your camera frame.

Step Four:

Draw a grid on each of your printed photographs. Divide the image (not the paper) in a vertical grid of 15 and a horizontal grid of 20 equally spaced elements.

Draw the same grid 15X20 grid on your BFK paper with a 4H pencil in very light and thin lines. (Draft carefully and accurately!)

Step Five:

With the remaining paper create two value studies.  For the first study make a single strip of a 1"X1" grid 10" long centered in your leftover sheet of your BFK paper. Fill in each grid from 100% black to 100%. In the

For the second study draft a 1"X10" strip centered in the second BFK scrap. Render the gradient shift from 100% black to 100%white over the 10".

For each value study above use a range of pencils from 6B to HB.

Two Additional  Prototypes

Complete two additional folded paper prototypes and upload the photographs to slack. Use the studio lighting setup for the photographs.
