Assignment 2

DUE: Wednesday, August 29 at the beginning of class first try of pop-up and vector analysis, Friday, August, 31, all final paper folding and pop-up exercises.

exercise:

paper pop-up

Access the online version of Cut and Fold Techniques for Pop-Up Designs.

Complete the following designs in white card stock. Transform the design of the exercise to include a unique proportional design,, well balanced, but NOT symmetrical. Strive for asymmetrical balance, cut the card in a unique hight to width ratio that is not the illustration in the book.

Exploration:

Vector Analysis - With your best limb to date create three (3) full scale vector analysis of your limb on news print. Each of the three analysis are to be of the same stick in three different, but interesting spatial orientations.

  • Study different spatial orientations of your best stick to date.
  • Free hand sketch a simple, but accurate, diagram of your limb in black charcoal
  • Draw the limb 1:1, full scale  with the accurate proportions and lines
  • Use a second unique color pastel chalk stick to outline the straight vector lines found in the limb, draw the vector lines from edge to edge on your paper (chalk sticks can be purchased in the A+A bookstore)
  • Use a third unique color pastel chalk stick to outline the curved vector lines found in the limb. Draw complete circles for curves that fit on the paper, draw lines the go to the edge of the paper when the circle is too large or the shape is a parabola.

Note the following sample images. You will make your images free hand, not computer generated as shown in the illustrations below.

Do a quick sketch of your limb with positioned on the paper in a well composed format. Consider a sketch that reveals the spatial quality of the limb.

Free sketch color lines that represent the linear vectors of the limb. Draw all vectors edge to edge on your paper.

Free hand sketch in a third color the curved vectors in complete circles, ovals, parabola, etc... from edge to edge or complete closed shape.
