OBJECTIVE

Evolve and transform three of your compositional designs from the hand crafted original into a printed Illustrator documents. Continue to focus on fundamental design aspects in abstract two-dimensional compositions by controlling the negative (white) area with the placement of the black elements. Make the white space become alive and vibrant by emphasizing contrasting major and minor spaces.

COMPUTER RESOURCES

Students who have a laptop and waiting to use purchase the department required computer  will need to download the free 30 day version of Adobe Creative Suite. At the end of the 30 days you will need to start your subscription. When your 30 day free trial ends make sure you purchase your copy of Adobe Creative Suite at the UT Technology store at the UC to receive the full educational discount.

Students who do not have access to a laptop at this time are to see the instructors for access to the computer lab to complete the project. 

PROCESS

se the monitor at your workstation in studio. 

If using your laptop create your design in studio on the new large monitors. Learn to attach your laptop to the monitor. If you do not have the correct cable make note and let the instructor know on Monday. 

In each Illustrator file organize information in three layers. 

Shapes - Lines, rectangles, squares, circles, and curves.

  • Shapes are to be made with fill and no stroke. 
  • In each composition one shape may become a primary color to provide focus or balance to the composition. 

Construction Lines - Lines used to align, organize and illustrate relationships between objects. Constriction lines are necessary to provide structure and 

  • Create construction lines that are .25 point and 50% grey.
  • Use construction lines on all shapes. (Reference edges, centers, and tangents as appropriate in your composition.)
  • Construction lines are to pass completely though the 11"X11" space. 

Underlays - Photographed or sketched versions of your original composition. 

  • Underlays must relate to one of your existing compositions as a photograph of the composition or a photograph of an improvement sketch.. 
  • Underlays must be made translucent to reduce the saturation and contrast. 

OUTCOME

Save and print three each PDF versions of your compositions. (Nine total prints)  

  1. Print to fit on 8.5X11 with all three layers, underlay, construction lines, and shapes on. 
  2. Print to fit 8.5X11 with only two layers, construction lines and shapes on. 
  3. Print to fit 8.5X11 with only the shapes layers on. 

Save your Illustrator files. You will need to access the information in a later project. (Back up your work.)

Due Monday at the beginning of class neatly pinned to the studio wall.
